4:3 vs 16:9

which do you prefer?

this isn't a question about whether watching a movie shot in 16:9 is better cut down to 4:3 or anything like that. obviously whichever format it was shot in is best to view it in.

but for any of your own film projects, or in terms of how a film you're watching was shot, do you have a preference? i have a warm spot for 4:3 i think, i really like the way things are framed by it, much more so than widescreen. hard to explain, but i think it feels a bit more intimate. not best for everything obviously, but i think overall i prefer it.

as a sub-question to this, widescreen was originally developed to distinguish cinema from the growing tv market, to give something extra to the cinema-goer. what do you think they'll come up with now a lot of people have widescreen TVs or laptops? there seems to be a bit of a push for 3-D on the more blockbuster end of the spectrum. i hope it doesn't take off in a big way, i couldn't really see it ever being more than a novelty. suppose you could've said the same about widescreen, colour etc. at one point too though.
