yeaaahh...

honestly, the scenes where korine was in front of the camera were the film's weakest parts, in my opinion. Still, i think i would've preferred this to that stupid fucking speech he made about "living like free people."

incidentally by far the weakest scene in Gummo is Harmony's scene.

My favorite parts of TH were when you felt like you really were watching a found object, and korine's "character" was too aware of the camera's presence. The other humpers weren't quite so performative in their destructive actions. It reminded me of reading de Sade and how clever he was... sure he was a libertine and a fucked up dude, but his writing was really witty and genius in its design that you really got into his head (this is where the Pasolini film fails, in my opinion). You really get into the destruction and depravity, and there were parts of trash humpers that were like that for me. When they were smashing tv's and lights and walls I was like "fuck yeah! git it!" or when they were cracking up at the fire hydrant or jerking off the leaves it was hysterical for some reason. Whenever he came on screen though his "act"" just came through way too hard. He took me out of it. Major boner kill.

That being said, I do like parts of the deleted scene posted above. I assume its supposed to be after they killed the guy, and its build-up is really frightening. You have no idea what he's going to do, and as he inches closer and closer it gets really tense.

exactly. thats what got me about it. i thought it was very powerful. when he cradles it in his arms i was literally awe struck. i totally agree about harm being well too camera aware.

but i his character is the one who held the camera 99% of the time so I think Hervé being aware of the camera as much as he was was definitely the character and not harm.

and i loved the scene in the car with harm.

My favorite parts of the movie were the shots of parking lots and stuff where you could hear the humming of the lights. And the one scene where they smashed the lights in the parking garage. Basically the parts of the movie that didn't involve the characters. Otherwise I thought it was kind of pathetic. I really liked the zine the dvd came with though that was nicely done. I just couldn't get into the masks and the fake accents and what not.

Good one. When he says "Shooting the movie was like (snaps fingers rapidly), “Now do this, now do this, now do this.”" I think that aptly sums up Korine's technique, heh.

Btw look out for Nashville Scene's 2010 Rock 'n' Roll Poll in the next couple of weeks, apparently Korine is a respondent it says here:
