Snowballs

Postby baal » Fri Sep 23, 2011 10:52 pm

The second collaboration with filmmaker Harmony Korine, the video Snowballs features Proenza Schouler’s Fall 2011 collection. Inspired by the great American west, the Navajo blanket-inspired textiles are featured throughout the video. Korine was given carte blanche to capture the collection on film, resulting in a four minute video titled Snowballs.

Thanks very much for uploading that!

Quite enjoyed that little film, not as much as "Act Da Fool" though. Still, it´s just another minor Korine work. I´m glad he´s working a lot (The bit in "Rebel", "Lotus Community Center", "Umshini Wam", new commercials, artwork etc etc) but I wish there would be another major Korine work on the horizon. Like a feature length (either the Ceddybu documentary or "Twinkle, Twinkle"), or the big retrospective book that was in the works. I´m ready for some major shit. It´s already been a while since "Trash Humpers" blew minds...

Totally agree with you. Didn't think this was anything really really special like the other works you mentioned but it's something.

So i guess it´s time to thank all you folks for keeping this site updated with the latest korine stuff...i really do appreciate that very much.
As for the proenzaschouler films, i really like both of them more than all the other stuff korine has been doing lately... i really didn´t know what to think of that umshini wam thing, let alone the commercials. and i guess his paintings just don´t excite me very much either...i mean the best thing with the paintings might be that he actually does do them. i liked the no budget approach with trash humpers and some of the images in the film did excite me, but all in all i couldn´t help but feeling a bit bored by all this pseudo-provocation. i really thought it could have been way more fucked up if this nihilism was really one of the main goals this film tried to achieve. like with the fat prostitutes and all...it seemed like he had to stop at some point for the sake of being able to show the movie in theatres...well i don´t know what i want so say exactly, trash humpers just seemed a little bit to overtly provocative to me, and for this, in a strange way too anxious in doing so.
i guess i prefer the format of the proenza films over trash humpers and umshini. strange images and a nicely written voice over.
whatever...

you're welcome on the updates front. i figure the site has plenty of regular visitors who also appreciate it, so you're not alone. i appreciate everything in these forums too, anything new is something good and deserves to be talked about.

as for this snowballs piece, i wasn't really a big fan. i preferred umshini wam, and i definitely prefer trash humpers to both, but that's a feature and these are mere shorts. in terms of style though the shorts and feature are very far between. these shorts, and the upcoming project with val kilmer, seem much more polished than trash humpers - but thats the logical way for korine to go anyway. i couldn't see korine doing another DIY film like trash humpers or even another dogme film. but thats for the future to decide.

i need to watch snowballs again to fully get a feel for it. but i did like the fat guy character.

I totally agree with you there. I forgot about "Curb Dance" as well. That one feels really special and it´s probably my personal favorite out of everything that Korine has put out in 2011.

i met him at the premier of trash hummers in Seattle. I was wearing his shoes that i bought off ebay. I wore them to confirm with him that they were really his and they were, much to his astonishment. He was a cool guy tho....

I met him at the LA premier of Mister Lonely a few years back (there's actually a candid pic of our interaction somewhere in the images section of this site). Agree completely with Kingfish... super nice guy. Rehab seems to have mellowed him out immensely... he seemed super appreciative and to me genuinely a bit surprised that people still follow his work as closely as they do.

Just as with Act Da Fool, some people are angered by Korine and calling him racist again:

http://www.forbes.com/sites/erikkain/20 ... -schouler/

http://www.canadianbusiness.com/blog/sa ... -it-racist

Korine doesn't really work on the level of trying to undermine advertising or anything but it's great that he's agitating these stale pricks who firmly believe they're in an innovative industry when really they're the death of creativity.

Maybe it’s just me – maybe I just don’t get pretentious art-house avant garde indie films or something, but the whole thing creeps me out. I know a lot of Native Americans, and I would feel really uncomfortable watching this with them – I feel uncomfortable watching this anyways, and would even without the blatant racism.

Quotes like this just make me laugh so hard. These are the kind of people who shouldn't even be opening up to this kind of media and do it just to present this opinion. Ridiculous, really.
